What is Balance When It Comes To Nutrition vs Exercise?

I have seen them at work. They spend three hours after the stress of work running on a treadmill. They are dedicated to losing weight. Later, I see their car parked at a Baskin and Robbins eating far more than they burnt off. The only result these people are going to get is an early grave.

Now I am not against exercise. I wish I could do more. I am still having some problems since I tore my cartilage but I am able to walk more than previously. However, studies have shown that some people who work out obsessively have a greater increase in heart attacks and strokes. Now I have known people that live long and are very healthy who jog and are in marathons. However, these people eat healthy also. I believe that the people these studies are pinpointing are the ones who exercises and gets the result of a stimulated appetite and uses the psychological excuse..I burned off 300 calories and so now I deserve dessert. Usually this involves an 800-1000 calorie sugar laden sweet with other unhealthy treats scattered throughout the day. I have noticed not a lot of calories are burnt on the treadmill or while jogging. Many people rely too heavily on cardio exercise and forget about a good eating plan.

The American problem is this..gym membership goes up 5% each year but the country is not getting thinner. Exercise alone is just not producing a leaner nation. Most people are still eating processed food, tons of sugar,(it’s in everything) crap fast food and just plain junk. If you want to lose weight, and losing weight is healthy, you have to have balance. You need to eat healthy foods. You need to cut out all sugar except for small amounts of  raw sugar, cut out trans fats also. Notice I didn’t say fats..just trans fats. Yes, exercise. Walk, use a treadmill, jog but also build your health with proper diet. I know balance works. I eat well but have a very hard time losing weight because I cannot exercise very much at all. I only lose a pound or two each month, but I do lose. Remember this balance and you’ll do fine.

It’s All in Your Head

This post is probably going to sound a little far out to you but it’s true. You have heard the expression you are what you eat. Now most people now days believe that is true. I have heard a few well educated morons dispute this but most of them are sick with some dreaded thing and don’t know why.. so I don’t argue with them.

Now more people dispute the saying you are what you think. People think that they can think anything you want and there are no consequences. Now I have studied my thoughts for years and I feel that this is a true statement. For years I woke up every morning and the first thing I would think is “I am tired.” I was tired for almost all of my life. Now when that thought comes to mind, I immediately think, “I am full of energy.” I now have more energy than I have had in forever. It also helps to speak these good thoughts out.

Now, I worked for a long time. I think the most common co worker conversation was, “I am fat.” Yes, even among male co workers. If you say that, you are thinking that and if you are thinking that, how are you ever going to change that? First of all, you are going to be depressed and not take action. Also, nothing will work. Why not? You’re not going to have enough mental energy to pull down that image. This is a losing battle. You have enshrined this image into your mind. It is stuck there and not going anywhere and does not plan to change until you change it. Stop looking in the mear and put a mental picture in your mind of your perfect body. Think that you are it and speak that you are it. Keep at it. It takes awhile to tear down that beast you have built in your mind but one day you will change that image, take action with good eating habits and exercise and then you won’t recognize that person in the mear.

An Old Wives Tale Exposed

Have you ever had this nutritional advice handed to you? I have, many times and headed it until it dawned on me that there are a lot of nutritional foods that happen to have been colored by the color white. What about cauliflower? Very nutritious. And what about chick peas and white beans that are full of protein? These white beans are very low on the glycemic index also.

Here is a list of foods that are white in color but foods your body cannot do without. Onions(although you can go purple, I love the color) garlic, cauliflower, parsnips and mushrooms. These are loaded with vitamins, minerals, fiber and very few calories.

What about yogurt? Coconut milk and other milks like soy and almond? Cow’s milk is fine too, I’m lactose deficient. These are all very high in calcium and protein. They are also high in probiotics.

Then there are seeds such as pumpkin seeds, white chia and sunflower seeds that are considered super foods and give us protein, anti oxidants and fiber.

Now, having said that, there are white foods you should not eat. If I eat a potato, it is usually a red skinned potato or a sweet potato(which is not a potato.) White pasta of any kind should be avoided. It is not nutritional and is fattening. I enjoy a little whole wheat pasta every once in a while. and of course there is white bread and white flour products to be totally avoided. So, consider the nutrition the food is going to give you, not the old wives tale.

And certainly there are forms of white fish that add to our protein each day and give us omega 3′s.

I Can’t Believe That People Still Do This

My friend called me. She was upset. She had spent 6 weeks counting calories, living on a subhuman amount of food. She felt like she was in a torture camp, especially when she had to exercise as part of her torture plan. She lost perhaps a pound.

I always wonder why people still do this. Losing weight is based on eating nutritious food not on starving yourself. First of all, it is a fact that if you eat less calories you will burn less calories. So the effort is pointless. By the way, if you overload your body with crappy foods you will burn less calories also. So by deduction, eating healthy food is the way to go. Many times people lose weight on a severly restricted calorie intake..once. Then because their body has been through this torture they don’t lose weight again. This is because their metabolism has been altered. It is also easier to lose weight on a low calorie diet when you are young. This is the reason women over 40 say they can’t lose weight. When I was 16 I lost a lot of weight by eating very little. After I got older that never happened again.

The chief reason to avoid this type of diet should be obvious. If you are eating very little of food that doesn’t contribute to your health in the first place you are going to become unhealthy. Unhealthy people develop all types of diseases. Also, some other unpleasant side affects. I’m sure we all know at least one unfortunate older woman who has lived on nothing since her teens and looks at least 20 years older than her chronological age. Eating healthy wins every time. My grandmother was in her 90′s, was at her perfect weight and she was a health food fanatic. People always mistook her for 60. She never even had gray hair. So, eat healthy. Don’t over do it and don’t forget to exercise.

Unfortunately, only half the shoppers ever read labels. Even organic food can be deceiving. Some organic foods can be highly processed so it’s important to find out what’s in it. Remember the only way to judge the quality of a food is to find out what’s in it. Remember if you can’t pronounce it or know what it means, you probably shouldn’t be eating it.

The last thing we are going to talk about are percentages.
It’s easy to get confused here, for example 2% milk. Ask most people and they will tell you that the milk is 98 percent fat free, but it actually means that two percent of the weight of the milk is fat. Whole milk is generally four percent fat by weight, so while two percent is reduced, it’s not low. In fact about 30 percent of the calories in a cup of two percent milk come from fat, and it’s same for two percent yogurt. Ground meat is another example. Ninety percent lean ground beef means that 10 percent of the weight comes from non-lean sources, including animal fat. Ninety percent sounds very lean, but a three ounce serving still contains about nine grams of fat, about half of which is saturated, the kind that raises “bad” cholesterol. It is best to go organic if you can especially if you eat milk and meat. It would be best to  go organic if you can, skim milk, 0 fat and fat free dairy are good to go with. As far as meats go, find the highest percent of lean that you can or perhaps find a good butcher and some very lean meat and have them grind it for you.

Some Confusing Things You Need to Know For Dieting

I often mention that you need to read food labels. Now if you do you know that this can be very confusing.

All information on the label is based on a single serving however look for the serving size. It may be so small that you might be eating 2-3 times as much. I have seen serving sizes listed as one and they were so small that, for me, it would be half an appetizer. So you need to keep in mind that you may need to multiply the disclosures on the label.

Remember that in the world of labeling the words reduced and low have different meanings. For example, a reduced sodium soy sauce may contain 25 percent less sodium than the original version, but that doesn’t mean it’s low in sodium. Sometimes reduced isn’t a good thing. They may have reduced the healthy ingredient that your body needs. If you have to reduce sodium check the labels very carefully and multiply correctly.

Also, learn the cover up terms. For instance, MSG was driven out of the market by public demand. MSG is an Exitotoxin that adds enhanced flavors to food. However, what MSG does to your brain and your body is not pretty it has been called the taste that kills. People are under the assumption that MSG is no longer in foods. But it is, it’s hiding in your food under a made up name. Keep in mind that one thing that they found in scientific studies   was that rats that were fed a diet with MSG in it became extremely obese. Restaurants and fast food restaurants use it but because they use different names for it, they don’t admit it.

The most common name for MSG is Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein. Also; Accent, Aginomoto, Natural Meat Tenderizer. Sodium hydrogen glutamate is another common name. There are so many hiding names and they change constantly that you should check this on Google to keep up with this important subject. There is so much on this topic and it is so important I will continue this next week.

A Few Great Tips For Weight Loss

I have recently discovered a few great tips for weight loss and I am happy to pass them along.

First of all, even though I suffer from hypoglycemia I ate three large meals a day. When I was working I felt I didn’t have time to follow the smaller meal more frequently plan. Now that I am retired I find that eating small meals that are alkaline based every couple of hours not only helps my blood sugar but also has helped my weight loss as I don’t start to starve during those hours when I’m not eating and snacking on something I shouldn’t be. There is the theory that this timing in eating is the key to telling your brain to release fat.

The second valuable tip is involved with drinking diluted cranberry juice. This gets a little tricky as it has to be real cranberry juice not that stuff you buy in the store that have sugar and additives in the bottle. I make mine by putting organic cranberries in a blender with a lot of spring water. Of course, cranberries aren’t always in season and so I am looking for a source for frozen cranberries.

Now this is the purpose of all this. This cleans the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a network that includes fluid filled tubes, glands,lymph nodes, the spleen, thymus gland and tonsils. This system bathes our cells and carries the body’s cellular sewage away from the tissues and into the blood stream where it can be eliminated.

Now, a recent study has found that 80% of overweight women have sluggish lymphatic systems and getting the system moving again helps with weight loss and makes it easier. It also gives you more energy and other health benefits. The diluted cranberry juice helps greatly in this and so does breathing more deeply. So go out and track down those cranberries and get going. It does work, I have tested it. Also, jalapeno peppers are a spicy but wonderful addition to your diet. They help to increase your metabolism.

With Weight Loss It’s In The Why

Why do you want to lose weight? I mean what is the deepest why you have to lose weight. Do you just want to look good in a bathing suit in the summer or are you genuinely concerned about your health? I really don’t care what your reason is as long as it is very important to you.

Why is this important? Always remember this quote: “If you have a big enough reason why you want something you will succeed no matter what obstacle you may face. Or you can have big excuses why it’s “not” possible. But you can’t have both.”

Your brain can come up with all kinds of resistance and excuses when you are stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new. This happens even when you know that it is going to be good for you.

One good excuse I have heard over and over is this; “I can’t afford to eat healthy,” your brain will keep telling you. Yes, good food is a little more costly but you can arrange your budget. In the long run you will be saving money by avoiding the costs of ill health.

If you really want to be healthy or attractive or whatever, (your why) you will make the sacrifice. You will commit to your reason.

So your assignment for this week is to find out the reason why you want to lose weight and then commit yourself to doing it, have a great week! When you do this you will be successful.

Well What the Duh?

You may have seen the science teacher who has been touring around advertising how he has lost over 30 lbs. by eating at McDonald’s for three months. Now I do mean nothing but McDonald’s. He did it as a kind of retort to the video that came out a few years ago called Super Size me where the gentleman gained weight and developed ill health by eating at McDonald’s.

Sounds good huh? Ready to go for a big mac? Hold your pants on. What this man isn’t telling you is this. He studied the website for McDonald’s and studied, picking the lowest calorie and healthiest food. http://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en/full_menu_explorer.html, He kept his calories under 2000.  He also chose to walk 45 minutes a day. These were all things he had not been doing before and he did not always disclose this on all the programs he toured.

Well, what the duh? You can lose weight using this method eating at home. This does not throw any weight to McDonald’s. Actually, McDonald’s leads the fast food industry in giving healthy choices and I think that is great and a huge improvement but this is the point. First of all since not all of the facts were always revealed many people are going to think that all fast food is OK. Actually this man should have gone at this at a different angle. He should have stressed personal responsibility and shown how you can lose weight by choosing healthy foods and moving around more. Eating at McDonald’s is not an answer (unless you have to once in a while) it is like going into a porn store that sells a few good books upfront and saying you won’t be tempted.
