Let’s Go Green

When my son was young, he turned up his nose at everything green. Of course, being a mother and health stressed so much in my childhood I just made him sit at the table until he ate it all. It’s a good thing he’s changed his mind now, from a motherly perspective. Green vegetables and other green things(we’ll get to in a few minutes) can be one of the best things you do for yourself. Try to get a good mixture of green vegetables each day.

I’m sure you have seen green drinks. They come in many forms and recipes. Here in the supermarkets in Seattle I have found a most wonderful green drink that is made with at least 30 different fruits, vegetables, grasses and algae. Wheat grass is particularly good for you, it is highly recommended by my cat Moochie. He loves his wheat grass and powdered wheat grass in a drink is very good for you. Green drinks can be detoxifying and give you plenty of alkalizing amino acids, minerals and antioxidants.

Some of the benefits of greens are

Calorie for calorie greens are the most concentrated source of nutrition of any food

Greens can lower your cholesterol levels and your blood pressure

Greens can boost your immune system

Greens can help protect against all forms of cancer

Greens enhance bone health and guard against osteoporosis

Greens regulate inflammation and blood clotting

Greens help prevent and possibly treat atherosclerosis by reducing calcium in arterial plaques

Best of all, greens give you all kinds of energy and can help you lose weight.

Supplemental greens are wonderful. You can usually get at least 10 different greens in a powder. If you are interested in energy look for Chlorella and Spirulina in the ingredients. I have been taking green powder and Spirulina for over 10 months now and my energy is fantastic. I wish I had had this much energy when I was 30. Now that my knee is healed I am getting a lot of exercise and losing weight quickly. Yipee! I take All Day Energy Greens mixed in water but you can mix it into many different smoothies.

With all this energy…Don’t forget to exercise.

You Are What You Eat…And What You Don’t Eat

Most people view weight loss as eating less and exercising more. However, for total health, we need to pay close attention to what we eat. Certain foods, especially those that increase inflammation, are triggers for weight gain, even in small quantities. For example, high fructose corn syrup may cause weight gain, regardless of calorie intake. Refined  sugar also causes a problem as it fuels chronic inflammation which can disrupt glucose metabolism.

The glycemic index is a helpful tool that measures how long it takes the body to break specific foods down into glucose. The low glycemic foods are metabolized more slowly, preventing blood sugar spikes that happen when high glycemic, high sugar foods are eaten. These foods cause a crash and cravings.

Be very certain to avoid refined sugar. Also avoid overly processed carbohydrates such as anything white, macaroni, spaghetti, ect. Replace these foods with fruits and vegetables and whole grain pastas, ect. These foods will not only give you high quality nourishment but will boost your metabolism and increase your energy. I find this very true. Now that my leg has healed I have more energy than I have had in a long, long time.

By the way, some other foods that will boost metabolism are 1. black pepper. That’s a surprise. Our old friend fish oil is also a metabolism booster too. Whey protein not only helps build muscle mass but also boots metabolism and supports detoxification.

With all this energy…Don’t forget to exercise.

What’s Up With Gluten?

Unless you re new to the planet I’m sure you have heard the term “gluten free.”  Gluten is a big problem in the digestive world. If you are plagued by digestive issues a gluten free diet may help you feel better. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. It’s also found in bulgur, spelt, triticale and kamut. It is said that one in approximately 150 Americans have a serious gluten problem. Many people have celiac disease, this is a condition in which the body reacts to the proteins in gluten as though they are harmful. The immune system responds by producing inflammation within the small intestine.

There is that word again. Inflammation. This is what we have been talking about, inflammation is the mechanism used by the body for fighting off harmful invaders. However, in the case of celiac disease, it’s misdirected. The inflammation damages or destroys villi, these are the tiny fingerlike protrusions lining of the walls of the intestines. Without healthy villi to deliver the nutrients you consume into the blood stream, malnourishment results, no matter how much food is consumed. Celiac disease can cause diarrhea, gas, bloating, constipation or over 300 other symptoms. It can also lead to more serious problems.

I eat gluten free pancakes simply because I like the taste and effect of them also. Eating regular pancakes makes me feel bloated and my stomach feels queasy. Although you need grains in your diet but cutting down, I believe will help you lose weight. There are mixed opinions on this but a gluten-free diet can help you lose weight by reducing  processed foods and complex carbohydrates and increasing  fruits and vegetables.   Losing weight can be a pleasant side effect if you are overweight and  diagnosed with celiac disease, which requires you to give up products containing gluten. It makes complete sense that if you simply eliminate   breads, cakes, pastries, pastas, cookies, and breaded or coated foods (think   chicken nuggets, french fries, meatballs) your calories will shrink   dramatically. Here is the trick with a gluten-free diet: Keep it healthy by upping the produce (veggies and fruit) and not merely replacing everything you are   giving up with a manufactured version that is gluten free. For example, there   are many gluten-free breads, crackers, cookies, and treats out there. Very few of them happen to be low calorie and/or good for you. You need to be careful though, many of the gluten free foods may not be good for you. So, enjoy gluten-free pancakes and breads in moderation, but don’t pursue the search for the gluten-free Twinkie, okay? Push up the produce and reap the rewards.

New Ways to Break Habits

Every one would agree that it is hard to get rid of bad habits. It is also hard to establish good habits. Remember those New Year resolutions. The making of good habits and the breaking of old ones is essential in dieting.

In his new book The Power of Habits by Charles Duhigg it is shown how to make good habits and break the old ones with a new method. First we identify the cue. What makes you eat that cookie at 4 every afternoon? The cue is the trigger. There are 5 triggers. Time of day, a certain place, the presence of other people, a particular emotion, or something you just did.

For instance you socialize with people when you eat your cookie. That is your reward and that is when the habit puts the cookie as the key to remembering. However, you can reshape the routine by diagnosing and paying attention to these cues and rewards. Thus, creating new habits.

But what if, instead of changing a habit, you’d like to start a brand new one… for example daily exercise?  In this case, you have to come up with your own cue and reward. But make sure the reward is something you genuinely enjoy, like watching your favorite tv show when you return.  Choosing the right reward is so important.

There was a study that was done in Germany where they told people, go running every morning, and when you are finished, eat a small piece of chocolate. And it worked! Because chocolate is a reward that people actually enjoy.  So by understanding our habits are simply cues, followed by a routine, then a reward, we can control our behavior.  Keep in mind that habits become easier with time until they eventually become automatic, requiring no thought whatsoever.  Also, if you commit to a habit and then break it, it will be easier to resume than when you first started it.

A New Secret Ingredient

OK, I stumbled on this one accidently but I researched it and found a wonderful health substance by chance. A while ago, I got a shipment of vitamins from ASN. They had included a bottle of oil of oregeno for sample. I put it away and thought nothing of it. A few weeks ago I found it in my cupboard and took a few drops. This has an extremely powerful taste and I have found it comes in capsules. I know that Puritans Pride has the capsules, The link is below. After taking it I found that I had more energy than I have had for many years.

Researching this I have found that it is a very powerful anti inflammatory natural product, also  a recent animal study shows that the active component of oregano oil, carvacrol, can prevent diet induced obesity by modulating genes and reducing inflammation in white adipose tissue.

This happens because carvacrol is a powerful anti inflammation fighter. If you have been following my posts an anti inflammation diet and anti inflammation fighters will help you to lose weight.

Is It Worth It?

Many times I hear the comment..”but healthy eating is just too expensive.” Now I certainly understand about budgets but I think it is well worth it. Now as far as fruits and vegetables go they are much cheaper than potatoe chips and other junk. I think it is just a mind set, I’m not asking you to eat organics, I don’t eat them either but fruits and vegetables bought in season can be very inexpensive. Also, were you aware that half of the American family’s spend 50% of their food budget on junk.

I don’t eat red meat. I do eat fish and chicken which is cheaper. I eat a lot of beans and other meat substitues. In 2005, Washington Post food columnist Sally Squires asked: “What about eating according to the new U.S. Dietary Guidelines? Can you do it without taking a big bite out of your wallet?” Her answer:

“A little more than $5 for a full day’s worth of modestly priced nutritious food (including oatmeal, milk, fresh fruit; beans and rice; whole grain and white bread, a hearty salad and a cup of peas). That’s about the cost of one average fast-food meal.”

When asked whether eating a sound diet costs less, Center for Science in the Public Interest Executive Director Michael Jacobson acknowledged:

“Unprocessed, basic foods are frequently dirt cheap. Potatoes sometimes go for as little as a nickel or dime a pound in many places, and they’re one of the very most nutritious foods. Beans and rice are very inexpensive.”

I would add that that should read brown rice. However, I agree completely. I save more money eating healthy than when I was married and eating like the average ordinary person.

My average food bill is $5 dollars per day and I eat well. Perhaps besides cutting out junk, which makes us fat perhaps some people can cut down somewhere else.

I might also add that I can control my weight better since changing. My grandmother, the health fanatic, would be proud.

The 7 Truly Deadly Sins

We have been discussing the anti inflammation diet. Did you know that researchers have now found that all disease begins with inflammation. It may seem hard to believe but that is what they are now finding.

Foods that are hydrogenated rank high on the list. A hydrogenated fat is a trans fat. (remember, they tried to ban those in New York) Some restaurants cannot serve trans fats there. A trans fat is responsible for heart disease which of course starts with inflammation. Even if it is not on the label it can still be a trans fat, thy name them other names. Of course overweight begins with inflammation.

The 7 deadly sins of inflammation.

1. Sugar…Sugar is one of the deadliest foods you can eat. I did a study of sugar last year and it is not at all harmless. People eat on average 152 lbs of sugar a year. High fructose corn syrup, which is in practically every packaged food causes you to eat twice as much. Is it really worth the few minutes of sweetness.

2. White flour…competing with sugar is white flour. I was never allowed to eat white flour as a child. It has no nutrition in it and causes inflammation. Also, beware of foods that turn into sugar once we eat them…refined carbohydrates. Refined carbohydrates are starchy foods that are white: white bread, bagels, English muffins, rice, pasta, rolls, biscuits, etc. Eating these foods is just like eating plain sugar as far as your body is concerned. They cause massive inflammation. Don’t eat them at all

3. Trans fats…

Trans fats are oils that have been hydrogenated. That means scientists took an oil and infused it with hydrogen. The end result is a disgusting “food” that is molecularly similar to plastic. It is so utterly foreign to our bodies that is destroys the cell membranes. When the cell membranes are corrupted bad stuff gets into the cells that shouldn’t and good stuff that should stay in the cells gets out.

What’s perhaps most disturbing about the effect of trans fats on cell membranes is the effect trans fats have on BRAIN CELLS. Research has already proven that people with diets high in trans fats have higher rates of Alzheimer’s disease, but now scientists are looking into the link between trans fats and Autism, ADD and ADHD. It’s no coincidence that the rates of these diseases have exploded in the same time period that our consumption of trans fats has also exploded, the last 30 years or so.

4. Omega 6 fats…

Omega-6 fats are vegetable oils. So don’t buy vegetable oil and cook with it, as most people do, don’t consume corn oil, safflower oil, grapeseed oil, cottonseed oil, canola oil or just about any liquid oil except olive oil or macadamia nut oil.

5. Stress of course upsets the body and causes inflammation. seek exercise, meditation or other ways to control stress

6. Pollution….there are many different forms of pollution of course, drink clean water, stay out of polluted areas, take vitamins often to clean your body from the filth of the world.

7. High Fructose Corn Syrup… When used in moderation, it is a major cause of heart disease, obesity, cancer, dementia, liver failure, tooth decay and more. Sugar in any form causes obesity and disease when consumed. I put it in a catagory of it’s own because as stated before, it is in almost everything.

Cane sugar and high fructose corn syrup are indeed both harmful when consumed in  doses of 140 pounds per person per year. When one 20-ounce HFCS sweetened soda, sports drink or tea has 17 teaspoons of sugar. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors consumed the equivalent of 20 teaspoons per year, not per day.

Revenge is a Dish Best Served

A few years ago I started a diet blog. A different one than this. At that time I was going back to my home town for my daughters wedding. I hadn’t been there for a long time. So, at that time myson lived next door to his father, my ex-husband. I wanted to lose weight and look great in order to smack him in the face. So, my plan was to lose weight, I have been “chubby” since I was 14. So after my son was born I gained more weight. My husband went nuts and said he wasn’t going to be married to a fat woman, the agony went on for a while until I decided to leave. So I decided I would go back looking great. And I did. It really, really felt good. So, I don’t think that revenge for those who don’t believe in us is a bad thing if it causes us to achieve our dreams.

What is your dream? Have people put you down for something or do you fel stuck in a rut? If you are reading this blog I know one of your dreams is to lose weight. Now it is one of my goals and I have a few more, so I encourage you to go after all of your dreams. If someone is putting you down just smile and continue pursing your dreams. Imagine when you achieve it. Imagine their mouth hanging wide open because they didn’t believe in you but you believed in you. Now you have achieved the thing they said you couldn’t do. Don’t ever hate these people, that’s a waste of energy. They feel inadequate deep down inside and so they are taking it out on you. Go for it, YOU are worth it.

By the way, I have found the most powerful book. It is called “Caught Between a Dream and a Job.” It is by Delatorro McNeal II and will change your life. It will cause you to achieve any dream you have and I highly recommend it.

More next week, Linda

A Curious Something In The News

First of all, thank you for your patience. I was very ill last week and could not get off the couch. I was mostly in pain from my knee. Sometimes physical therapy can be painful.

Last week I was reading about a man who found cooking and eating time consuming. He had developed a drink that supposedly had all the nutrients in it and he was going to do this the rest of his life. Now I haveextreme reservations about this. This can have serious consequences. First of all, there is no fiber. Besides the obvious, fiberous foods are important for our teeth. Believe it or not, chewing is important. There may be nutrients he didn’t count on that may be missing. What about boredom..after twnty years that could be more than boring. Now I tend to eat the same meals every day but it only lasts a couple of months. Now, I began thinking about diets that are basically all drinks. I wonder how long that would last. A protein drink, even once a day, is fine, but don’t over do it.

A good diet tip is this Regular meals, starting with breakfast, help you to regulate how much you eat by stabilising blood sugar levels and allowing you to recognise natural feelings of hunger and fullness. They also stop you worrying about hunger as you will know your next meal or snack is not far away! And a healthy breakfast, is not only linked to long term weight control success, but a healthier, more nutritious diet overall.

Are You a Foodie?

We all do it. I have done it. Eating and cooking are the biggest social outlets around. We eat because we’re lonely, we eat to entertain ourselves and for a whole host of reasons. I noted the entertainment value while I was watching a cooking show. First of all, there is nothing wrong with eating. It is necessary.

I’m not too much into the physiological aspects of eating. I think it has it’s place but I have found a much simpler method. Do you eat a lot of junk? Or when in company do you just eat what ever is put in front of you? Do you understand basic nutrition?

I have found that if you get it into your mind that you are only going to eat healthy foods and you are not going to eat junk. This at first sounds difficult but you do it at one step at a time. For instance, you eat a lot of candy. look up what this will do for your body. Think about how you want to feel physically 5 years from now. Get feeling healthy stuck into your mind. One thing that has helped me is on one side seeing my 90 some year old nutritionist grandmother on her roof redoing it. On the other hand, one of my first jobs was at a nursing home seeing older people very ill and after getting to know them that their diet was bad long before they got there. Now of course sometimes other factors play into this as it does with weight but eating and exercising not only helps in aging and disease but in weight control. So, X that candy out of your mind and substitute dark chocolate. Look up sugar and see what it can do to you.

Make this a mind set. You want to be healthy and so eating unhealthy food won’t help you achieve that goal. Don’t worry, this takes a lot of time to develop a taste for healthy food but it will come and as a bonus your weight will come down.

You can buy great vitamins at great prices here, get your green coffee here. Go to Puritans Pride or ASN. Both are great buys. They are under the Fountain of Youth icon
