Quantity vs Calories

At last! I think I have finally hit upon the ideal way of truly losing weight. Not just losing a few pounds and gaining it back. And it was there in front of me all along. You all know how I hate counting calories and prefer to eat good food. Well, eating good food is important in losing weight. However, I would only lose a few pounds every now and then. I started taking some powerful B vitamins for my leg problem and suddenly I had no appetite. (They have other herbs in them also) I began eating half the amount that I had been eating. To my surprise I have lost 25 pounds without thinking about it. Now to me this is the best of two worlds. I don’t have to go through the frustration of counting calories and I am still eating the same good diet that I had been. I just have to watch the proportion size. Now I realize this isn’t new but it isn’t the hassle of writing down everything you eat, adding up the calories and sacrificing something that could be good for you because it exceeds your calorie limit. Of course you could eat 1200 calories of Twinkies a day and work out and lose weight. However, you won’t be doing this for a full month. You will drop over and that would be it. So, I prefer to eat my healthy food and not have to worry about wearing my body out. Now I just eat half the amount I used to. Contrary to the popular belief not all vitamins suppress appetite. In fact, in some cases, vitamins can actually make people feel hungry by boosting their metabolism. According to published clinical studies, research and journal articles, the following main vitamins are considered as natural appetite suppressants:Multiple “B” vitamins that can help control hunger and suppress appetite include B2, B3, B5 and B6 . Vitamin B3, for example, is associated with the spikes in blood sugar levels and is released when a person eats something (which results in the rise in his blood sugar or glucose levels). Similarly, vitamin B5 helps mediate the function of thyroid gland which is directly related to the control of metabolism. Vitamin B complex vitamins can be found in a variety of food resources such as milk, liver, green leafy vegetables, seeds, beans, legumes and vitamin supplements. I take a combination that is for specific leg problems and it not only cured my leg problem but I discovered it took away my appetite. I think that’s a good deal. Keep Inner Fires Burning

Did you know your thyroid can be fixed naturally? Many tired feelings, sluggish feelings and even depression can be traced back to your thyroid. Dr. Ridha Arem, M.D states this,” Thyroid hormone is very important in weight loss, because it is one of the key regulators of metabolism. It is the hormone that works on mitochondria to burn fat.” Dr. Arem also notes that thyroid medication alone will not help you lose all the weight that you have gained but stresses that you have natural help also, that is food and exercise.

Pesticides interfere with thyroid production. As you lose weight through a good diet(Mediterranean is recommended) and exercise, many of these pesticides that are stored in the fat will be discharged from the body.

Heavy metals will also cause the thyroid to stop working. As above, a good diet will help to dislodge these.

Chronic stress is one of the leading causes of a non functioning thyroid. Cure the stress that you live with and you will feel much better all the way around.

Chronic inflammation will also lower the function of your thyroid. Good diet and exercise will address this problem. Cut out all sugar immediately and incorporate healthy foods.

A Mediterranean diet with a high amount of protein is the best diet while you are getting the thyroid working. Also make sure that the diet is high fiber. The Mediterranean diet does not include red meat but does include fish and chicken and dairy such as Greek yogurt and cheese. You can eat some grains, such as quinoa and brown rice. Of course all fruits and vegetables are included in the diet(not potatoes).

Exercise is important also. Thirty minutes of exercise a day is recommended.

Tip: Did you know that most yogurts have excessive amounts of sugar in them? Stick to Plain Greek Yogurt. It is low in sugar.

Why Am I Tired?

There can be a lot of reasons why you are tired. However, if you are tired constantly and have pain along with it you may have that mysterious disease Fibromyalgia.  Now fibro myalgia usually strikes women although I have seen cases of men having the disease.

There are several different symptoms of fibro-myalgia in women. The most prevalent symptom of fibromyalgia is overall body ache. The body ache is often accompanied by extreme fatigue. This heavy fatigue is one of the leading symptoms of the disease. This is followed by tenderness in the joints. Many women feel as though their muscles have been over strained or that they have participated in a workout. Also mood swings and depression is a common trait. Many times these symptoms appear as soon as the patient awakes. Many times the muscles experience twitching or painful muscles, another symptom is deep seated pain. The widespread pain symptoms of the condition have been the subject of numerous studies. According to clinical reports, almost 97% of all people who have this disease experience this overall body pain. In fact, most people who are diagnosed with this disease have sought medication attention as a result of this particular symptom. Fibromyalgia symptoms in women occur constantly in some patients, while others experience the pain only sporadically.

The causes and cures of myalgia in women are not known. Another interesting fact is that more African American women develop this condition than Caucasian women. The most doctors can do is work to control and ease the pain so that patients can lead a semi normal life with less pain. There are of course natural ways to ease the pain that comes with this disease. A diet that can help women with myalgia should contain many fruits and vegetables that are high in vitamin A. Avoid nightshade vegetables, that would include eggplant, tomatoes and white potatoes. These aggravate pain. Include in your diet a lot of fish, particularly salmon. Also, it is very important to stay away from man made poisons such as aspartame and so called energy products. These will increase your pain. Exercise is of course important but it may be best to choose yoga over running.

Other ways to help Fibro Myalgia

Although there are no known cures for fibromyalgia I have found these quite helpful.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar
There are many trace minerals in apple cider vinegar that help ease the pain of fibro myalgia. The main mineral that helps seems to be malic acid but also phosphorous, chlorine, potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, sulfur, iron, fluorine and silicon.
In recent studies malic acid has been found to be important in producing energy on a cellular level. The studies suggest that apple cider vinegar may help improve the flow of energy of muscular cells. Studies also show that the nutrients in apple cider vinegar are important in relieving the stress caused when oxygen is used to release free radicals.
2. Natural Pain Herbs
I totally dislike medication and I was so happy when I found herbs that help relieve pain and help me to relax. I had trouble sleeping before I found a natural pain reliever called aptly, muscle relaxer. The one I like has valerian root and skullcap, gingeroot is also recommended for the pain of fibro myalgia.
3.Sea Weed Products
Studies have found that toxins are at the base of fibro myalgia. It has been long known that seaweed products will flush toxins out of your body thus relieving and helping control the pain of fibro myalgia. Toxins are also responsible for the mental fogginess that people who suffer from fibro feel. There are many seaweeds out there, some are better than others, experimentation will help you to find what works for you.
4. Relaxation
While the cause of fibro myalgia is not clear, it is known that stress and emotional distress play a large role in the root cause. Relaxation exercises are very important. Aerobic exercises can reduce stress and ti chi and yoga can give you time to relax.
5. Sugar is a no no.
Sugar in its natural state in fruits and vegetables will not cause a rise in pain but research has shown that the pain level goes up when white sugar(sugar that has been separated from its natural ingredients) has been added to their diet. The reason is simple. A diet high in white sugar causes the kidneys to dump vital minerals such as calcium,magnesium, sodium and potassium. Pain rises when your body is short of these minerals.
6. Weight Control
When I was more overweight my legs hurt more simply because I was carrying more weight on them. It is much easier to control the pain if you are not carrying so much on your muscles. Study has shown that overweight people (more women than men) have a higher risk of getting fibro myalgia. The pain level goes down drastically when you lose weight, exercise and proper weight have been found to be protective to the body.

Keep Your Eyes Out For These

I was watching a program the other day about diets. These were not balanced diets for losing weight but rather termed “crazy diets that are in fad now.” One of these was the “Clay Diet.” Yes, as you are probably thinking, people are eating dirt. Now when I was in school many years ago, I knew many girls who were eating dirt. But hey, they were young. Also, I found later, they were anemic. It is a symptom of anemia. But hey, it was probably from all the worms they were developing in their system from eating dirt.

So, how do you spot an unhealthy fad diet. Look for these signs.

1. A diet that concentrates on one or two types of foods.

Many years ago there was a diet called the fruit diet. All you ate was fruit.  I almost fainted after a week on it. I was not getting enough nutrients to exist from day to day. Now, I put the Adkins diet in this. People need good carbohydrates. I am also including the Paeo diet in this although it is a little broader than the Adkins diet but still lacking nutrients. I had to go to a doctor after the Adkins diet and had health effects for years. You need balanced eating from all food groups.

2. A diet that severely restricts calories.

I’ve talked about this before but an 800 to 1200 calorie diet will make you malnourished. I don’t believe in counting calories at all. First of all, it’s too much work. Secondly, it is usually inaccurate. You will never get enough food to build health with diets like this.

3. Meal replacements

I have mixed feelings on this one. I have seen and even used some plans where you can make your own meal replacements. This way, you know what is in the food and if it is healthy. These usually involve smoothies. Most bars and shakes have ingredients that may have been renamed and are actually harmful to your health. Once again, you may be missing out in nutrients you need. Also, these are not fresh foods. If there are any fruits or vegetables in them at all, the nutrients have probably been lost because of preservation.

4. Skipping meals

There are diets out there where the person only eats a meal every once in a while. This is another scam diet that will eventually make you malnourished. Eat three meals a day or even small meals whenever you are hungry. Don’t fall for the next bit of hype. Learn how to be and stay healthy and let your weight take care of itself.

A Great Escape

Type two diabetes is growing in numbers every day. Now I am going to say this slowly..I used to have type 2 diabetes but I learned to control it so well that it is no longer a problem. I say it slowly because we have been taught that there is no cure to this disease. So here I go, I will explain not only how to lessen it’s effects (sorry, I can’t guarantee a cure) but how to prevent it.

Number one, diet. Cut out sugar.(you knew I was going to say that) absolutely cut all sugar and high fructose corn syrup out of your diet. Next in step one is very seldom ever and if possible never eat in a fast food restaurant. If you do, if you have the choice, go to one who has healthy choices and eat from that menu.

Number two, lose weight if you are overweight. Sometimes you don’t even have to lose all the weight you need to but even if you drop 10 lbs your helping your body a lot.

Number 3 Get enough sleep. Too little sleep can lower your levels of leptin. Leptin is a hormone that makes you feel full. Also, not getting enough sleep can throw off your blood sugar and insulin levels.

Step 4 Get enough exercise. Get out in the fresh air and walk. Did you know that belly fat pumps out compounds that cause inflammation? A little walking each day helps bring down inflammation, improves insulin sensitivity and cuts fat buildup in the liver, even without a change in the diet.

Now, step 5 seems a little strange to me. Brushing your teeth may actually help prevent diabetes. Women who rarely brushed their teeth were more than twice as likely to have diabetes, compared to those who brush after each meal. This applies to men also. It makes sense when you think about it. Inflamed gums are spreading the poisons throughout the body.

Lastly, smoking doesn’t just cause lung cancer but has been linked  to diabetes also. Be sure to stay away from second hand smoke if you don’t smoke.

A Home Town Secret to Staying Slim

I used to live in Ohio. In an hour I could be in Amish Country. It was a wonderful place. Crafts, good food and a look at a culture different from us Clevelandites. One thing I always noticed was that Amish people were generally slim even though the food they ate was not noticed for slimming. They even include desserts in their meals.

Now, when awake, Amish folks are always on their feet. They farm, they walk, they don’t have TV’s and computers so they are always active. They also usually don’t work at desks. Amish men average 18,400 steps a day and women 14,200 a day. Average people generally work in 9,400 steps a day. They don’t slow down with age either. Average seniors drop to around 7,000 steps a day.

Now the Amish are not naturally slim. They can be as heavy as anyone else. These people prove that being active can help you stay slim.

A daily walk will help you melt away belly fat. Walking 30 minutes a day five days a week shrank their waistlines and trimmed body fat. It will also drop your blood sugar and clean your arteries. It will also invigorate you with more energy than you ever thought possible. Spending at least 20 minutes a day taking an easy walk can rev up your nervous system and make you feel energized. In a study at the University of Georgia they ran a test on people who complained of fatigue and they felt energetic at the end of the study. I know it has helped me, even though I still find it difficult to walk, I make sure I walk every day. I walk around a park as much as I can and every hour or so I get up and walk several times around the house. Having  been barely able to walk and now being able to walk most of the time I know that this is true. Walking is good for you and will help you keep your weight down.

Rant Continued

So I am going to continue my rant last week about gluten and “doctors and nutritionists” starting a campaign to get people to stop eating all grains and all carbohydrates. It’s Dr Adkins all over again.

 So what is gluten? (dictionary)

a substance present in cereal grains, especially wheat, that is responsible for the elastic texture of dough. A mixture of two proteins, it causes illness in people with celiac disease.

Now as I said before, gluten is natural but it has become a problem when the government began messing with the way that grain is grown. If you are sensitive to gluten or have celiac disease I do recommend that you stay away from gluten. However this is not the majority of the population.

Now let me explain what the benefits of grains and carbohydrates are and why you should not be without them. It was found that seniors 60-80 years old who ate the most whole grains had the lowest BMI and the least body fat. In a separate study people who ate only whole grains were found to lose weight, shrank their belly fat and tamed inflammation compared to people who  ate refined grains such as white bread.

Whole grains keep blood sugar stable. I have found this to be true. Replacing refined grains with whole grains slash diabetes risk. Whole grains improve insulin sensitivity.

Whole grains protect your eyesight in old age. Cereal fibers that boast a low glycemic index such as oatmeal, seem to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration.

And despite what this nutritionist stated in his book, whole grains help you to dodge other major illnesses. Eating whole-grain foods lowers your risk of heart disease, heart failure and strokes.

So eating whole grains and carbohydrates serve a purpose, as long as they are good carbs. Learn how to be healthy. Read but keep an eye out. If someone concentrates on one food type being the worst thing on earth, return that book to the nearest book store. Now I will say that does not include sugar. But then there is good sugar (raw sugar, raw honey) and then there is the bad. (white processed sugar, high fructose corn syrup)So always use your common sense when learning nutrition.   Rant finished

Overdoing Madness

So today I will rant. This is sort of a continuation of last week’s blog. Please remember that much of this is my own opinion. I am not a doctor nor a scientist but I do study and I do have common sense. Now, what I am referring to is listening to a health program last week where a well respected nutritionist had apparently flipped and blamed gluten for every disease known to man. He actually made that statement. This is someone who I used to trust for nutritional advice.

Now, I am going to say first that there are people who are allergic to gluten and there are people who have celiac disease. They need to be on a gluten free diet. He pulled all carbohydrates in with this and said there all to blame. There are bad carbohydrates, agreed.(white bread, doughnuts, ect) There are also carbohydrates that are necessary for health. I learned that from becoming very ill on the Adkins Diet. He did not want people eating fruit and most vegetables. When the host asked what one could eat, the doctor stammered and said, well, there is Salmon. I guess this is the real caveman diet. I also want to say this and I mean no disrespect but I have been watching this man for years and I judge people by their health appearance and quite frankly he appeared ready for the tomb. Could there be nutrients missing in his diet?

Now, everyone is entitled to his opinion even when it’s not based on fact. And certainly everyone has the right to write their own book and express their own opinions. The problem is this; I did just a small amount of research on the subject and found that doctors and researchers are filing in and claiming that this is fact and the media is piling in, even though even they themselves admit that the research isn’t in. They are playing on our fears. It is just like last week’s post when the government was involved in pushing low fat. Food is there for a reason in variety because you need different nutrients and they are contained in different foods. I love Salmon but no you can’t live exclusively on it.

Now I’m going to rant a little further. I know gluten is formed by how wheat is grown now rather than in the past but we need to speak out on that. I also don’t think it harms a majority of people…yet, we need to speak out on that. Sugar and high fructose corn syrup are far more dangerous and cause far more disease. Also artificial sweeteners like aspartame cause far more harm. My father drank quarts of pop each day with aspartame in it. He died of Alzheimer’s and the doctor and I were quite convinced it was the aspartame that had produced it. I will also point out that aspartame paralyzed my arm. Fortunately this same brilliant doctor knew the dangers of this and I have never touched it since. Food fetishes go on and on but don’t get stuck on them. As I always say, study and then study some more.

What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You

Do you remember the bad old days? The days in the 1990′s when fats were “proven” to be bad for you. I had a friend at this time. When we would go to a grocery store and look at meat she would look at a steak and say all she envisioned was a heart attack.

There are good fats and bad fats. Trans fats are very bad fats. Most oils are bad for you except for olive oil and coconut oil. Safflower oil and things like that..you might as well be using oil for a car. Butter(Not margarine) fats from meat and those oils are very good for you and necessary.

Now, the government allows loopholes in labeling. Gee, they allow loopholes in much of the food industry. If everything had to be totally honest 80% of food would be taken off the shelves. Now, the food is safe as far as the fact that it is not going to kill you when you eat it. It may down the road but that’s not the governments problem. For instance If you bought a box of cookies and read the label it may say 0 trans fat. Trans fat is very dangerous. There may be .5 grams of trans fat in that one cookie and so if you eat several and that may harm you in the long run. However, because each cookie has .5 grams of trans fat the government states the company can claim it has 0 grams of this substance.

Now if you investigate the genesis of this theory, it was found that the government’s initial decision 30 years ago to promote low-fat diets was not based on recommendations from doctors or scientists, but rather from lawyers who worked for Sen. George McGovern in the mid-1970s. Why? No one seems to know.

They just came out with the document and it set the ball rolling where finally some government body is telling Americans to eat less fat and eat more carbohydrates.

With the release of the government’s “Food Pyramid” in the early 1990s, it was official: the low-fat/high-carb diet was America’s food plan. And it made people heavier. Also, many diseases can be traced to this.

Actually, many “fat” foods like butter are good for you where it’s counter part, margarine, has been proven to be bad for you. I always urge people to do their own food investigation of what is good for you and what is not. For instance, I just watched a program on gluten and I did not agree with it at all. The doctor who was disparaging carbohydrates was a little over the line. I agree that gluten is bad but much of it has to do with how the grain is grown. My dissent on this was that he was including fruit and many vegetables in his gluten rant as they are carbohydrates. Also, he went on to ascribe almost every disease to carbohydrates. Many of these diseases are a direct result of processed sugar not carbohydrates.(although some carbohydrates can turn to sugar when digested) Good carbohydrates are necessary for good health and I was glad I had done my homework or I could have fallen for this silliness.

Are You Ready to Cheat?

My apologizes for the delay in new posts. My site had many problems caused by a website problem. It took quite a bit of work to get it back to normal. Thank you so much for your patience.

There is quite a controversy on the internet right now. It involves cheating being allowed on your diet. Here is how it goes.

The first version involves cheating one full day once every week. Now this version has good reasoning behind it. First of all, it is something to look forward to. Secondly, this nutritionist claims that a high fat,high glycemic carb cheat day is what has been shown by research to best boost insulin and leptin levels, reset metabolism, thyroid hormone levels, and 24 hour energy expenditure to baseline levels. The point is that your body hates dieting (and I believe that) and if you don’t cheat once a week you won’t lose weight.

The theory on all of that biological speak is that your metabolism will work better if you cheat once a week and you will lose weight more easily. Now the author of the  theory states that of course you will lose weight without cheating but it will be more difficult.

For me, I tend to go to the other side of the fight. I would agree with this author that if you are near your goal a cheat day won’t hurt you. However, if you are obese or overweight this could hinder you and is not really necessary. I like what she says that a cheat day  assumes that you are not eating enough good food the other 6 days of the week. My total agreement is with her statement that if you eat good food each day (just less of it). It lines up; with my theory that you eat good food and don’t stuff your face with junk. I am so ingrained into eating good food is that a cheat day would be an extra serving of vegetables.

Now, I see points on each side and since I have never tried a cheat day it may help some people. You can certainly try it for yourself. I certainly can see that a cheat day would give you something to look forward to. There are good points on each side. I, however, have been eating a vegetarian, non goodie diet for so long that I wouldn’t know what to eat for a treat.
